This, following the announcement last month by the government of states on the central bank's inclusion in the heritage list.
This status, also known as "National Monument," will grant the state government the power to manage the site and also protect it from illegal actions.
It will be the first of its kind in Latin America, and perhaps the continent as a whole.

This is not the only African-Brazilian tradition to be declared a national heritage by the Brazilian state. There are many and, for the most part, they date back many years.
Cannibalism, for example, was criminalized in 1872, and has since then only been practiced by minority tribes in the Amazon region.

Though it is not an indigenous group, it is protected as a national heritage by the Brazilian government.
